Global Stock Index Reference: 25 Major Equity Benchmarks

A provider-sourced reference to major global equity indices, showing market coverage, index provider and the broad construction used by each benchmark without relying on a live index level.

Last reviewed: 2 September 2026. The dataset records disclosed values, definitions and status rather than estimating missing information.

Index names are often treated as interchangeable shorthand for a country or market, but they can differ materially in company count, weighting method, eligibility and geographic scope. This reference keeps those definitions attached to the benchmark.

It deliberately does not publish a live index level. Values move continuously and are better obtained from the index provider or an exchange-linked market-data service. The purpose here is durable methodology and coverage reference.

Methodology

Only widely followed equity benchmarks with an identifiable index provider and public methodology or product page are included. The construction column is intentionally high level and should not replace the provider's current rulebook.

Provider methodology takes precedence if a rule changes. GMR reviews the reference periodically and does not infer constituent eligibility from company size alone.

Using the dataset

These research pages are maintained as reference datasets rather than one-off news stories. Readers citing a table should include the review date because company, regulatory and project status can change materially between updates.
